Columbia to sign wind energy agreement
(COLUMBIA, MO) - Electricity produced from the first wind energy
farm in Missouri will be flowing into Columbia in 2007. The Columbia
City Council unanimously approved a memorandum of understanding with
Associated Electric Cooperative Inc. at the Nov. 6 council meeting. The
agreement between the two entities will be officially signed on Nov. 9
at 10 a.m. in the Columbia City Council Chambers located at 701 E.
Broadway.
The Bluegrass Ridge Wind Farm is being built by the Wind Capital
Group who will sell the energy to the Associated Electric Cooperative
Inc. The wind farm in King City, Mo., will consist of 27 2.1 Megawatt
(MW) units. Associated Electric Cooperative will distribute the energy
to Columbia and other electric cooperatives across the region. Columbia
Water and Light will buy the output of three wind turbines. The amount
of electricity delivered to Columbia will be dependant on the wind
speed. Columbia Water and Light staff estimates that the wind energy
agreement will furnish enough power to serve approximately 2,300
Columbia homes annually.
Dan Dasho, director of Columbia Water and Light said,
Columbia Water and Light is excited to be a part of the first wind
energy farm in Missouri. It is a great project because it is a
cooperative effort of utilities owned by the citizens of Missouri. It
will bring renewable energy into our homes and helps the economy of
rural Missouri. This purchase of energy will help the city of Columbia
reach the renewable energy mandate voters passed in 2004.
NOTE: Representatives from the electric cooperatives and the
Wind Capital Group will be speaking at the event and will be available
to answer questions.
