PedNet Project Advisory Committee wants your input

COLUMBIA, MO (November 29, 2006) -- Citizens will have two opportunities to provide input and check out the activities of the “PedNet Project: Connecting Columbia” advisory committee at two public information meetings scheduled for Dec. 7 at Reichmann Indoor Pavilion at Stephens Lake Park, 2300 E. Walnut and Dec. 13 at the Activity and Recreation Center, 1701 W. Ash. Both meetings are scheduled for 6 - 8 p.m.

Meeting format consists of brief project overview at 6 and 7 p.m., followed by public discussions and input at information stations. Those stations are: trails, roadways, promotion and education, sidewalks, and the University of Missouri - Columbia plan. Committee members and city staff will be available to answer questions and to explain committee activities.

“There has been intense public interest in this very important public project,” said Mayor Darwin Hindman. “The outreach meetings are designed to provide a project overview in a format that allows interested citizens to get the information they need while providing input and engaging in a dialog with committee members and staff.”

Columbia is one of four communities that received a federal grant to develop and implement a Nonmotorized Transportation Pilot Program. The purpose of the program is to demonstrate the extent to which bicycling and walking can carry a significant part of the transportation load, and represent a major portion of the transportation solution, within the selected communities. The grant amount is about $22 million over a four-year period. The other communities are Marin County, California; Minneapolis - St. Paul, Minnesota; and Sheboygan County, Wisconsin.

The committee has been split into subcommittees, each of which has been looking at different aspects of the project. The city hired a project manager in August to help guide the project through completion.

The committee soon will be forwarding the Phase I Bikeways Infrastructure Plan to the City Council for consideration.
