Unattended cooking fire results in $25,000 damage

COLUMBIA, MO (November 30, 2006) -- Columbia firefighters responded to a report of a fire at 3601 West Broadway, Kelly's Ridge Apartments, at 6:12 p.m. on Wednesday Nov. 29. Arriving companies discovered a cooking fire had taken place in a third floor apartment and the building's sprinkler system had extinguished it prior to arrival of fire units.

The occupant of the apartment informed fire investigator Lt. Ron Fisher that she had placed a pan of oil on the stovetop to cook her food, but subsequently left the kitchen to study and forgot about it. The fire was quickly brought under control by the working sprinkler system; however several apartments sustained water damage.

Unattended cooking fires are one of the nation's three leading causes of residential fires along with smoking materials and candles. The Columbia Fire Department would like to remind all citizens to stay attentive while cooking and keep a lid or cookie sheet nearby to cover a cooking fire.
