Water main construction closes MKT parking lot

(COLUMBIA, MO) - Columbia Water and Light will be tying in a new
36-inch water main to the existing distribution system the week of April
16. This project will take place at the west entrance to the MKT Trail
on Scott Boulevard. The parking area on the west side will be closed on
Wednesday, April 18, and Thursday, April 19. The parking area on the
east side will remain open.
The 36-inch water main is the second large water transmission
line from the water treatment plant near McBaine to Columbia. The
project was funded through a water system expansion bond issue approved
by voters in 2003. Also part of the bond issue was expanding the water
treatment plant from a pumping capacity of 24 million gallons of water a
day to 32 million gallons. The new 36-inch water main will allow extra
water to be pumped to Columbia and it will also serve as a backup for
the existing transmission line. These water system expansion projects
will enable Columbia Water and Light to keep up with the growing demand
for water. Last summer the treatment plant pumped a record 23 million
gallons of water in one day.
