Boards and commissions applications are available 
COLUMBIA, MO (April 18, 2007) - The Columbia city clerk is accepting
applications for boards and commissions. Applications must be received
by the clerk’s office, 701 E. Broadway, 4th Floor, by noon on Friday,
May 4. Applications are available at the clerk’s office or may be
found on the city’s Web site at www.GoColumbiaMo.com on the City
Council page. The following are current boards and commissions
openings:

The Board Of Adjustment has one vacancy for an alternate member, to
serve in the absence of a regular member, with the term to expire Nov.
1, 2011. The Board is responsible for hearing and deciding appeals where
it is alleged there is an error in any order, requirement, decision or
determination made by administrative official in the enforcement of
zoning, planning and subdividing ordinances. Monthly meetings are held
the second Tuesday at 7 p.m.

The Building Construction Codes Commission has two vacancies for
alternate members (to serve in the absence of the regular member) in the
following categories: residential rental property owner (term to expire
Aug. 1, 2007) and person experienced in fire prevention (term to expire
Aug. 1, 2008). The commission periodically reviews and makes
recommendations relating to building construction codes. Monthly
meetings are held the fourth Monday at 4:30 p.m.

The Community Development Commission has one vacancy with the term to
expire Nov. 1, 2008. The member must be a qualified voter of Ward 6 and
shall not serve on the board of directors or be employed by any agency
which applies for funding through the commission or which receives
funding upon recommendation of the commission. The commission acts in an
advisory capacity in all matters pertaining to community development.
Monthly meetings are held on call. 

The Disabilities Commission has six vacancies. Three members shall have
a significant disability as defined by the Americans with Disabilities
Act (one term to expire June 15, 2008, and two terms to expire June 15,
2010); two shall have knowledge or experience in providing services to
individuals with disabilities or an interest in the welfare of city
residents with disabilities (both terms to expire June 15, 2010); and
one shall own or operate businesses within the Columbia area (term to
expire June 15, 2009). All must be residents of the city of Columbia.
The Commission considers concerns relating to residents with
disabilities. Monthly meetings are held the second Thursday at 3 p.m.

The Environment and Energy Commission has two vacancies with terms to
expire June 1, 2010. Both must be a qualified voters of the city and
should have knowledge in matters pertaining to the environment. The
commission serves in an advisory capacity for all matters pertaining to
environmental protection and conservation. Monthly meetings are held the
fourth Tuesday at 7 p.m.

The Board of Health has one vacancy with the term to expire Aug. 31,
2008. The member must be a dentist and a registered, qualified voter of
the city. The Board acts in an advisory capacity to the Council on
matters pertaining to public health and animal control. Monthly meetings
are held the second Thursday at 3 p.m.

The Health Insurance Appeals Board has one vacancy with the term to
expire Feb. 16, 2010. The member must have substantive professional
experience in benefits administration for a large organization. The
Board hears appeals from the decisions of the administrator. Monthly
meetings are held on call.

The Housing Authority Board has one vacancy to be appointed by the
mayor with the term to expire May 31, 2011. The member must be a
taxpayer who has resided in the city of Columbia for one year prior to
appointment and cannot be an officer or employee of the city/county for
which the Authority was created. Duties include overseeing housing
projects. Monthly meetings are held the third Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.

The Mayor’s Committee On Physical Fitness has one vacancy to be
appointed by the mayor. The committee educates the public about the
importance of regular physical fitness activity and promotes, initiates
and encourages local physical fitness and sports programs in the
community. Monthly meetings are held on the second Monday at 12:30 p.m.

The Board of Mechanical Examiners has two vacancies. One member shall
be a registered professional engineer with the term to expire on June
17, 2009, and one shall be a layperson with the term to expire June 17,
2010. Both must be residents of the city of Columbia. The Board is
empowered to give examinations for mechanical heating, ventilation, air
conditioning and refrigeration licenses and certificates. Meetings are
held the second Tuesday every other month at 5 p.m.

The Parks & Recreation Commission has two vacancies with terms to
expire on May 31, 2010. One member is needed from Ward 2 and one member
is needed from Ward 3. Both must be registered qualified voters of the
city. The Commission acts in an advisory capacity in all matters
pertaining to public recreation. Monthly meetings are held the third
Thursday at 7 p.m.

The Board of Plumbing Examiners has two vacancies with terms to expire
May 31, 2009. One member shall be a master plumber and have six years in
or working at the plumbing business and one member shall be a person not
engaged in, working at, employed by or connected with plumbing, a
plumbing firm, contractor or the plumbing industry. Both must be
residents of the city of Columbia. The Board establishes standards and
procedures for the qualification, examination and licensing of master,
journeymen, residential and apprentice plumbers, and issues certificates
of competency as appropriate. Monthly meetings are held the last Tuesday
at 5 p.m.
