Waterfall under construction at Stephens Lake Park
COLUMBIA, MO (August 22, 2007) - Trail users at Stephens Lake Park will
need to take a slight detour for the next few weeks due to the
construction of a new waterfall and bridge. A portion of the trail
surrounding the lake is temporarily closed.
Detour signs are posted for alternate routes via the boardwalk and the
trail surrounding the park. Columbia Parks and Recreation staff
estimates the bridge will be completed in mid-September.
The new waterfall will be located on the hill north of the lake trail.
The waterfall will flow approximately 200 feet downhill over native
Missouri limestone boulders into Stephens Lake. Water from the lake will
be pumped through a recirculating system to feed the waterfall.
The bridge currently under construction will allow lake trail users to
travel over the water flowing into the lake at the bottom of the
waterfall. The waterfall will add to the beauty of the park, as well as
improve the water quality of the lake by aeration and natural
filtration.
The project is being funded by a $50,000 gift from the estate of Russ
and Mary Nall. For more information, contact Parks and Recreation at
874-7460 or go online at www.GoColumbiaMo.com.
