City Builds On The Past To Serve The Future:
Public invited to review proposed City Hall renovation and expansion
plans at December 6 open house

(Columbia, Missouri) --The public is invited to review proposed
plans for the Columbia City Hall renovation, expansion and accompanying
community plaza and streetscape on Thursday, Dec. 6, 4 - 7 p.m. in the
City Hall Mezzanine - Daniel Boone Building, 701 East Broadway.
Building and landscape architects and the plaza artist will be
on hand to answer questions and gather input on the proposed project
which seeks to make city services more accessible, improve working
conditions for city employees and build an economically and
environmentally sound facility that will adequately serve the community
for the next 20-plus years.
The project, which will be accomplished without raising taxes,
includes a new addition consisting of five stories above grade with
approximately 73,339 square feet and renovation of the existing City
Hall, consisting of approximately 55,352 square feet, for a total of
128,691 square feet.
Designed to meet the needs of the community for the next 20-plus
years, environmentally sound and energy-conscious measures will go into
both the renovation and new construction using guidelines of the U.S.
Green Building Council - Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design
(LEED).
The renovation and expansion will provide a fully accessible
City Council Chamber on the entry level. The project also enables the
city to consolidate operations, which allows greater efficiency of
services and improved internal and external communications. It also
provides city employees with safe, decent working conditions without the
need for leased office space.
When it was built in 1917, the original Daniel Boone Tavern and
Hotel immediately became the place to go for social and business
networking. The Rotary Club of Columbia was founded and met weekly there
from 1922 to 1975. In keeping with the city’s commitment to restoring
and repurposing historic downtown buildings, the Daniel Boone Building
will be renovated for modern use while maintaining important
architectural features - including an exterior that more closely
resembles the original 1917 structure.
By investing in a significant public asset that will serve the
citizens of Columbia for years to come, this project serves as a
building block for other area development - adding life and vitality to
the downtown area; creating new opportunities for economic growth and
jobs, while also enriching the experience of those visiting the area.
Following completion of plans and a competitive bidding process
for the construction, work on the project is expected to begin in May of
2008. For further information on the project or the open house, please
contact Tony St Romaine, assistant city manager, at (573) 874-7721 or by
e-mail at Tony at GoColumbiaMo.com.
