City prepares for weekend snow removal

(COLUMBIA, MO) - The city of Columbia Public Works Department
announces snow removal plans are in place and ready for tonight and
Saturday. The city will work to make sure first and secondary priority
streets, as well as critical areas, are safe and passable. Once these
are passable or clear, operations will move into the residential areas
if there is more than four inches of snowfall.
In order to run the snow-plowing operations as efficiently as
possible, the city asks citizens to keep parked cars off streets. Parked
cars are an obstacle to clearing the street well, and also pose a hazard
for plows. Streets will be plowed more thoroughly if there are fewer
cars parked on the street.
If citizens scoop snow from their driveways, they should keep
the snow to the right side of the driveway (as facing the street). This
will help keep the driveway from being plowed shut by snow plows.
Residents have asked why some snow plow trucks have their plows
up during snow events. There are many reasons why this may occur. When
the snow plows make trips to and from the street division facility to
get more treatment material, they may go over streets that have already
been treated. If streets have already been treated, crews raise the
plows so they do not remove salt/cinders/calcium chloride that has
already been put down. Plows may also be raised to insure ice/snow is
not bladed back into citizen’s driveways if the street has already
been treated to a safe and passable condition.
The snow operations will maintain contact with the Joint
Communications office to handle all emergency situations. The city’s
snow removal map is available online at www.GoColumbiaMo.com for
citizens to view the priority status.
