Sprinkler system contains fire at paternity testing facility

COLUMBIA, MO (February 7, 2007) -- A fire that broke out at 300 Portland on Wednesday, Feb. 7, at 8 p.m. was kept under control by a sprinkler system until firefighters could arrive to extinguish the remaining fire.

Firefighters initially responding to a fire alarm had to upgrade the response to accommodate a working commercial structure fire because of reports that the clinic was filling with smoke. When firefighters arrived at the scene they found smoke and the remnants of what almost became a major fire, if not for the role the sprinklers played.

Fire Investigators on the scene stated that the cause and origin of the fire was a malfunctioning vent fan located in a bathroom in room 119. The room was used for storage and had no smoke detector in the bathroom.

“This fire could have easily spread throughout the structure if there was not a sprinkler system,” Lt. Debbie Sorrell stated.

No one was in the clinic at the time of the fire alarm and no one was injured during this incident. Initial damage estimates are not available at this time.
