City crews work to patch potholes

(COLUMBIA, MO) - The ice and snow may have melted around the
city, but that doesn't mean an end to problems on the roads. As the
temperatures rise, city crews are dealing with the scars left by the
harsher than normal winter weather - potholes.
Potholes form after rain or melted snow seeps into the cracks in
the roads and then freezes. The expanding ice splits the pavement, and
the holes get larger as vehicles drive over them. This cycle of movement
and pressure eventually leads to the loose asphalt popping out causing a
pothole.
Columbia street crews use two methods to patch potholes. Winter
cold mix is a temporary aggregate of asphalt and oil, while the summer
hot mix is permanent and used in the warm weather. The later of the two
mixes works permanently when the holes are tacked, squared out and
properly compacted.
“Right now we're patching and sweeping up salt and cinders
throughout the city," said Mary Ellen Lea, Public Works Operations
manager.
The street division schedules crews to maintain the city’s
road surfaces. If you notice a pothole or street in need of repair,
contact the Public Works Department at 573-874-6289 or you can report a
pothole electronically on our Web site at www.GoColumbiaMo.com.
