Operation Red Wreath - update

COLUMBIA, MO (January 2, 2006) -- Operation Red Wreath, a fire safety
challenge to the residents of Columbia, concluded today. The Columbia
Fire Department recorded three fires during the Operation Red Wreath
counting period which were attributed to holiday activities. Two fires
were caused by unattended cooking and one by careless smoking. Damage
estimates from all three fires were less then $50,000 and one fire
caused a fire-related injury.

Nationally, hundreds of fires, costing hundreds of thousands of
dollars, occur due to holiday decorations, according to the National
Fire Protection Association. The Columbia Fire Department appreciates
the efforts of Columbians for practicing fire safety methods during the
holiday season.

With the new year upon us, we challenge Columbia residents to practice
fire safety every day this year.
