Area firefighters deploy to assist fire crews in southwest Missouri
COLUMBIA, MO (January 17, 2007) -- Around 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 17, firefighters from the Columbia Fire Department and the Boone County Fire Protection District deployed from the Boone County Fire District headquarters en route to Springfield, Mo., to assist with the unusually high number of calls as a result of the winter storms and to provide relief to crews working around the clock.
Fire Chief Bill Markgraf (CFD) and Fire Chief Steve Paulsell (BCFPD) were on hand to brief both crews as they prepared to deploy to southwest Missouri.
Apparatus and crew members being deployed are; Lieutenant Rolando Tobar, Engineer Ron Cook and Firefighter Rich Harris responding in Quint 6 (CFD). BCFPD provided Lieutenant Tom Putnam, Firefighters Jake Waller and Marcus Herman responding in Engine 801.
Crews were told to expect difficulty in reaching fires and other incidents because of downed trees and other obstacles. Other issues such as water availability, road conditions and personnel safety were discussed during the briefing, as well.
Crews will initially deploy to an Emergency Operations Center (EOC) in Logan-Rogersville before being assigned to an area or station. Once assigned the crews will respond to any calls typically associated with fire and EMS. The crews will remain in southwest Missouri until roughly noon on Friday, Jan. 19.
