Overheated transformer spills oil into Flat Branch Creek
COLUMBIA, MO (July 8, 2007) - An overheated transformer at the
University of Missouri power plant at the corner of Stewart and
Providence Road boiled out between 50 to 70 gallons of mineral oil that
ended up in Flat Branch Creek. Cecilia Campbell, an environmental
specialist with the Department of Natural Resources, was taking an
evening walk along the MKT Trail and noticed a sheen on the surface of
the water.
She made a phone call and started the process of locating the origin of
the spill along with its containment. The Columbia Fire Department
responded to the scene and began containment of the oil on the water's
surface by deploying hazardous material booms. The booms float and
gather contaminants that are lighter than water, such as oils or
gasoline and allow them to gather into a pool for collection.
The use of the Fire Department's all-terrain vehicle was invaluable for
access and rapid deployment of the booms. This vehicle assisted in
getting the firefighters approximately a quarter mile down the trail to
find an uncontaminated area in the creek for deployment of the booms to
prevent further spread. The special operations truck and hazardous
materials trailer also responded for addition resources.
The University of Missouri is coordinating the cleanup with the
assistance of Missouri Department of Natural Resources at this time.
