Vehicle crashes into apartment
COLUMBIA, MO (June 3, 2007) - The Columbia Fire Department responded to
a report of a motor vehicle crash at 6 Granda Blvd. at 3:32 p.m. on
Sunday, June 3. Firefighters were told that a vehicle had crashed
through the patio door in apartment A and that the apartment occupant
was slightly injured.
Firefighters arrived to find a minivan had left the parking lot and
crashed through the sliding glass patio doors of apartment A. The driver
of the vehicle was able to exit the vehicle and reported that she was
not injured. The building is a fourplex.
The occupant of apartment A, Zia Matori, 51, was in the living room on
the couch reading a news paper when the vehicle came crashing into his
apartment, moving the couch he was lying on several feet. Matori
suffered bruises and a small cut on his lower right leg and was
evaluated by fire and ambulance personnel. Matori refused medical
treatment.
Columbia Police were called to investigate the crash. Early reports
indicate the driver believed the vehicle was in reverse and stated some
mechanical problem caused the vehicle to shift into drive and crash
through the apartment. Columbia Police continue to investigate.
The Protective Inspection Division of the Columbia Public Works
Department sent a representative, Stephen Redmond, to the scene to
ensure that the structure was safe for residents. Redmond stated the
owner would need to brace the wall and doorway where the vehicle entered
the structure until permanent repairs could be made. It is not known if
Matori will stay in his apartment tonight or stay with family members..
