Lunch in the Park welcomes Douglass Park renovations

COLUMBIA, MO (June 19, 2007) - The Columbia Parks and Recreation staff
recently made more than $450,000 in improvements to Douglass Park,
including pool renovations, new basketball courts, lighting and concrete
walkways that will directly benefit the Lunch in the Park program,
drawing more visitors to the park.

The Columbia/Boone County Health Department’s Lunch in the Park is
celebrating its seventh year of providing nutritional lunches to
children 18 years or younger, who would otherwise miss out. Lunch in the
Park is funded by a USDA Grant and is an extension of the school free
and reduced lunch program. The food is being prepared by the Columbia
Public Schools.

Besides the recent additions to the park, Columbia Parks and Recreation
is also managing the facility on a daily basis, as well as providing
community recreation for the children. One of the active participants is
STARS (Seeking Traditions, Art and Rights of Passage), a six-week
program for youth ages 6-14 at the Armory Sports Center. Participants
walk to Douglass Park for lunch each day.

Other community organizations that participate with the Lunch in the
Park include: Columbia Police Department, The Daniel Boone Library,
Kiwanis Golden Keys, The Missouri Department of Conservation, City of
Columbia Fire Department as well as the Boone County Fire Department.

Lunch in the Park is every weekday from 11:30 - 1 p.m. at Douglass
Park. Interested volunteers need to call the Columbia/Boone County
Health Department.
