Record number of Columbia citizens continue to imagine the future and
create the vision
COLUMBIA, MO (March 9, 2007) -- Citizens who care deeply about
Columbia’s future will participate in the next Citizen Topic Group
meeting set for Wednesday, March 14, from 6 - 8 p.m. Sessions will take
place at West Junior High School, 401 Clinkscales Road.
One hundred twenty additional citizens and eight new co-facilitators
joined the visioning process at the last Citizen Topic Group meeting on
Feb. 21.
New co-facilitators include:
● Kay Callison, executive director, American Audio Prose Library;
● Dee Dokken, citizen;
● Dan Goldstein, research scientist, Northwest Research Associates;
● Toney Lowery, senior parks planner, Columbia Department of Parks
and Recreation;
● Dave Overfelt, graduate student and teacher of sociology,
University of Missouri;
● Nick Peckham, architect, Peckham & Wright Architects, Inc.;
● Jo Sapp, author; and
● Steve Spellman, trust officer, Boone County National Bank.
Participants in 13 Citizen Topic Groups representing a cross-section of
the community are working to determine a vision for Columbia. At the
March 14 meeting, each Topic Group will finalize all subtopic goals and
prioritize strategies for each. Other citizens are welcome as guest
observers.
This work will result in a “draft” vision plan to be shared with
the community-at-large on April 4, 2007. Citizen Topic Groups will
continue meeting at least monthly through June 2007. Their “final”
plan will be issued this summer.
Topic Groups include: Arts and Culture; Community Character; Community
Facilities and Services; Community Pride and Human Relations;
Development; Downtown; Economic Development; Education; Environment;
Governance/Decision-Making; Health, Social Services and Affordable
Housing; Parks, Recreation and Greenways; and Transportation.
