City volunteers will be recognized Thursday

(COLUMBIA, MO) - The city of Columbia will recognize the efforts
of the hundreds of volunteers who have contributed to the city at a
reception Thursday, March 15, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Cosmo Community
Center, 1517 Burlington St.

volunteers and will recognize the city’s “Volunteers of the Month”
for 2006. The event will be emceed by Darren Hellwege, morning host and
features reporter for KBIA radio. The event themed “Volunteers are our
Pot of Gold” will have a St. Patrick’s Day theme and feature
entertainment by the Central Missouri Celtic Arts Association.
During the city’s 2006 fiscal year that ended Sept. 30,
volunteers contributed 37,760 hours toward city programs and projects.
The financial benefit of city of Columbia volunteer hours is estimated
at $681,190, based on a national value of $18.04 per hour.
Volunteers help the city of Columbia in many ways, including
educating the public about recycling, keeping our storm water clean,
patrolling a neighborhood or city trail in cooperation with the Police
Department and planting trees in our parks.
Volunteers are also key to conducting city events and festivals,
keeping our streets clean and beautiful and preparing to help during
emergencies.
Anyone wanting to learn more about volunteering opportunities
with the city of Columbia can call the Office of Volunteer Services at
874-7499 or visit the city’s Web site at www.GoColumbiaMo.com.
