Workers accidentally rupture gas main on Business Loop 70 W.

COLUMBIA, MO (March 19, 2007) -- At 1:11 p.m. on March 19, the Columbia
Fire Department received a report of a gas odor outside at 315 Business
Loop 70 West. Responding units arrived within five minutes to find that
a city of Columbia Water & Light crew had accidentally ruptured an
8-inch gas main.

As part of a sidewalk construction project on the north side of
westbound Business Loop 70 W., crews were boring holes to relocate light
standards that would otherwise be in the way of the walkway. 

As a precaution, units of the Columbia Fire Department and the Columbia
Police Department blocked off Business Loop 70 W. from Garth Avenue to
Parkade while Ameren UE worked on stopping the leak from the bi-directed
8-inch gas main (because the main is a bi-directed line, the source of
gas comes from two directions).

The gas leak was stopped in approximately one hour and the incident
terminated at 2:12 p.m. There were no injuries to the workers,
bystanders or emergency personnel during this incident.
