Water Treatment Plant open house cancelled

(Columbia, MO) -- The Columbia Water Treatment Plant open house,
scheduled for Wednesday, May 9, has been cancelled. The plant is located
in McBaine, Mo., which is near the Missouri River. There are concerns
that the highway leading to the plant might be flooded if river levels
continue to rise. The open house has not been rescheduled at this time.

Columbia Water and Light’s water plant is continuing to
operate. There have been many flood protection measures since the floods
in the 1990’s. Both the flood wall surrounding the plant and the wells
are 40 feet tall which is higher than the 1993 flood level. There are
also backup generators to supply electricity to the plant in the event
of a power outage. With the predicted river levels at this time, the
Water Treatment Plant should be able to continue operations and supply
Columbia with water.
