Columbia/Boone County Health Department supports World AIDS Day
COLUMBIA, MO (November 29, 2007) - In support of World AIDS Day, the
Columbia/Boone County Health Department will be at the Women’s Center
at the University of Missouri from 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. Public health
department staff will provide free HIV testing and education. The goal
is to encourage the awareness about the impact HIV/AIDS has on our
county.
World AIDS Day was started in 1988 and is officially held every Dec. 1.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in 2007
approximately 33.2 million people worldwide are living with HIV, and
more than 2 million people have died from AIDS. Prevention and testing
are an important part of minimizing the spread of HIV. Unrecognized HIV
infections in sexual partners account for the spread of more than half
of all new HIV infections each year.
The Columbia/Boone County Health Department additionally offers an STD
clinic every Tuesday evening at the Health Department from 5 p.m. - 7
p.m. For more information on our clinic or on any additional programs,
please visit www.GoColumbiaMo.com.
