Open house planned for historic Wabash Station
(COLUMBIA, MO) - The Columbia Public Works Department and
Columbia Transit invite the public to attend a special ribbon cutting
ceremony celebrating the completion of renovations to the historic
Wabash Station. The Wabash Station is the main hub of Columbia Transit.
A ribbon cutting will be held on Thursday, Oct. 11, at 10 a.m. Senator
Christopher S. “Kit” Bond will be a featured speaker at the event.
Local artists Don Asbee and David Spear will also be recognized for
their artwork as part of the city’s Percent for Art Program. The
ceremony will take place at the Wabash Station, 126 N. 10th St.
Total cost for the renovation project is $3.5 million. The
project was funded by a grant from the federal government and local
transportation sales tax. Renovations include the addition of a new
administrative annex, an expanded waiting area in the historic depot,
repairs to its original limestone exterior, a covered walkway at the
back of the building and refurbishing the tile roof.
The station originally opened in 1910 as the Wabash Railroad
Station and provided passenger service until 1964. Listed on the
National Register of Historic Places in 1979, the building is a living
reminder of the role rail travel played in bringing the world to a
growing community. The city purchased the facility in 1982, which now
serves as the central hub for its bus transportation system. For more
information about the event, contact the Public Works Department at
(573) 874-7250.
