Health Department hosts Bi-National Health Fair

COLUMBIA, MO (October 11, 2007) - The Columbia/Boone County Health
Department will host a health fair on Oct. 15 at 1005 W. Worley St. in
support of Bi-National Health Week. The fair will begin at 5 p.m., with
food provided at 6:30 p.m., and the fair ending at 8 p.m. 

There will be distribution of education materials, as well as
activities available for Hispanic members of the community. All
participating agencies will have a translator and bilingual information
available. Community members may receive HIV education and testing,
diabetes information, blood pressure tests, glaucoma screenings and
dental assessments at no charge.

The participating agencies include:

● The Columbia Food Bank
● Missouri State Office of Minority Health
● Padres Como Maestros
● Parentlink
● Bank of America
● Centro Latino 
● Alzheimer’s Association
● Medline Plus
● Columbia Public Library and Bookmobile
● Dr. Russell Harrison 
● Red Cross
● Paula J. Carter Center on Minority Health and Aging
● Safe Kids
● Family Health Center
● Girl Scouts
● Columbia/Boone County Health Department
● The Woman’s Shelter
● The University of Missouri Extension Office

The Bi-National Health Week was established in 2002 and is an
initiative of Alianzas, a program of the University of Missouri
Extension and the University of Missouri-Kansas City Institute for Human
Development; The Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs through the
Consulate of Mexico in Kansas City; The Institute for Mexicans Abroad;
and the Bi-National Health Week Planning Committee. For the next three
years, this partnership will support a week of health promotion and
health education activities intended to improve the health and
well-being of migrant and immigrant worker and their families. The
health fair is held simultaneously with Mexico’s National Health Week,
and it will occur across the United States.

Additional Missouri Bi-National Health Week events will take place in
Kansas City, St. Joseph, Sedalia and Wentzville.
