Columbia Historic Preservation Commission seeks notable property
nominations
(COLUMBIA, MO) -- The Columbia Historic Preservation Commission
is accepting applications for its annual 10 Most Notable Properties
award. The 2008 awards will mark the 10th year that the Historic
Preservation Committee has selected properties for this prestigious
list. Nominations are due Nov. 5, 2007.
To meet general eligibility requirements, properties need to be
over 50 years old; be located inside the City of Columbia corporate
limits; and have architectural or historical characteristics that
contribute to our city’s social and/or aesthetic resources. The
properties may be endangered or derelict, recently restored or just
nicely maintained. Notable properties may be a house, a park, or
workplace; modest or grand; hidden away or in public view. All public
and private buildings that meet the above criteria, including those
residential or commercial in nature, are eligible.
Over 90 properties have received the notable properties
designation since 1998, including Switlzer Hall on MU Francis
Quadrangle, Columbia Cemetery, J.W. “Blind” Boone Home, Virginia
(City Centre) Building, Lela Raney Wood Hall at Stephens College, Boone
County Courthouse and the John Stewart Home, which is a private
residence.
Applications for 2008 and accompanying non-returnable documents
must be submitted by Nov. 5, 2007 to City of Columbia Planning and
Development Department, Attention: Historic Preservation Commission, 701
E. Broadway, P.O. Box 6015, Columbia 65205-6015. Submission materials
can be downloaded by using the link on the City of Columbia’s homepage
at www.GoColumbiaMo.com or by calling the Department of Planning and
Development at (573) 874-7239.
The Historic Preservation Committee, chaired by Brian Treece,
will sort and evaluate the nominations. In February 2008, the 10 Most
Notable Properties will be honored with an award ceremony that includes
refreshments, displays of past 10 Most Notable Properties and a slide
show. The exact location and date of the award ceremony will be
announced in November.
