Smoke detector alerts family to fire in the kitchen

COLUMBIA, MO (April 7, 2008) - Shortly after 9:50 p.m. firefighters at
Station #2 received a “walk in” report of a commercial structure
fire at 701 Claudel Lane, Apt 201, from Glen Cook (an acquaintance of
the residents).

Firefighters arrived to find a small cooking fire that scorched the
stove, refrigerator, cabinets and burned a hole in a nearby purse. A
pressurized water extinguisher was used to put out the flames.

Fire Investigators on the scene stated that for a brief moment while
everyone was outside the babysitter heard a smoke alarm sounding. When
Cook went in the apartment to investigate he found a small kitchen fire.
He then drove east on Worley to the nearby fire station to report the
fire. The fire is being blamed on unattended cooking (french fries left
on the stove) and the damage estimate is less than $1,000 at this time.

The Columbia Fire Department would like to remind everyone the role
smoke detectors play in alerting families to smoke and fire in its early
stages. Fire can grow rapidly, so it is important you test your smoke
detectors often and change the batteries at least twice a year
(preferably during daylight savings time). If your smoke detector is
over 10 years old, replace it and always have an escape plan with at
least two ways out!
