Weather does not deter volunteers from participating in Cleanup
Columbia
COLUMBIA, MO (April 12, 2008) - In spite of the chilly temperatures,
1,200 volunteers picked up 1,548 bags of trash and logged 2,150 hours of
service at today’s Cleanup Columbia as estimated by the city of
Columbia's Office of Volunteer Services. These numbers are based on
reports from 46 groups that provided data on their cleanups. More than
450 volunteers attended the post-cleanup luncheon at Twin Lakes.
In addition to those who braved the weather today, more than 150
volunteers are expected to reschedule their pick up within the next
month due to today’s weather. The Office of Volunteer Services will
continue to gather data from volunteer groups over the coming weeks.
Cleanup Columbia is a city-wide trash pick up event that is organized
by the city of Columbia’s Office of Volunteer Services. During Cleanup
Columbia, volunteers pick up litter along streets, in parks and along
streams and trails and this year also removed graffiti from public
property in central Columbia.
Cleanup Columbia is sponsored by APAC-Missouri Division, the Sierra
Club, CenturyTel, Wal-Mart, the Columbia Daily Tribune, 102.3 BXR, the
Mid-Missouri CW and KOMU TV 8. Columbia Public Works and the Golden K
Kiwanis Club provide special assistance for the event.
Additional updates on the work accomplished by Cleanup Columbia
volunteers will be posted on the Office of Volunteer Services’ page of
the citys' Web site at www.GoColumbiaMo.com.
