Seventh Annual Bike, Walk & Wheel Week offers host of activities

(COLUMBIA, MO) - The 7th Annual Mayor’s Challenge: Bike, Walk & Wheel
Week is scheduled to begin Saturday, May 3, with an afternoon kickoff
event at Flat Branch Park. The weeklong series of events and activities
is designed to encourage everyone to use active modes of transportation,
like walking or biking, to get to work, school or other destinations
around town.
If you’d like to participate in Bike, Walk & Wheel Week, register
online at www.getaboutcolumbia.com or visit the GetAbout Columbia office
at 101 N. Seventh St. Participants can register any time, including
Breakfast Station Day on May 9, and receive a free T-shirt.
In 2001, Mayor Darwin Hindman first challenged Columbians to bike, walk
or wheel to work and other destinations, and 750 people joined in.
Participation in Bike, Walk & Wheel Week continues to grow. The 2007
Challenge drew more than 3,450 registrants. Take the challenge in 2008
and bike, walk and wheel your way to improved health and a better
community.
Bike, Walk & Wheel Week is a part of GetAbout Columbia, which is a
community-wide program designed to encourage active modes of
transportation-travel other than in cars. Funding for GetAbout Columbia
is provided by the Federal Highway Administration’s Non-Motorized
Transportation Pilot Program. For more information, visit the Web site
www.getaboutcolumbia.com, or call the project office at (573)
442-7189.
