Pet safety in warm weather
COLUMBIA, MO (August 4, 2008) - The Columbia/Boone County Health
Department reminds pet owners of the following hot weather tips to
ensure pet safety during the summer months.
1. Regularly check your pet’s water to make sure it’s clean and
fresh. Ample drinking water is
vital to animals during hot and humid conditions. Make sure to adjust
the drinking quantity for the
size and number of pets in the area. You can also spray your pets with
water to cool them off.
2. Provide a shady space for your pet. A pen near trees will work or
you can fasten a sunroom
screen to the sides and top of the pen to provide shade too.
3. Never leave your pet unattended in a hot vehicle. Internal vehicle
temperatures can reach 150
degrees.
4. Check for ticks and mosquito bites. Just like humans, animals can
get West Nile or tick-borne
diseases. Check with you pet’s veterinarian on vaccinations and tick
prevention methods that would be best for your pet.
5. Finally, always make sure your pet is wearing ID tags and/or is
microchipped.

someone isn’t
providing adequate care for a pet, please contact Animal Control at
449-1888.
