Technical Rescue Team stabilizes duplex damage after vehicle accident

COLUMBIA, MO (August 4, 2008) - Columbia firefighters were called at
8:13 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 4, to 2803 Fair Haven Drive for a report of a
vehicle accident with a vehicle striking a building.

Fire crews found a duplex with severe damage to one side, and a vehicle
in the front yard with significant front-end damage. Witnesses reported
the vehicle entered the structure after traveling off the roadway and
through the front yard. There was one male occupant in the damaged
apartment at the time of the accident, who was not injured.

Several members of the Columbia Fire Department's Technical Rescue
Special Operations Team were dispatched to the scene due to the amount
of structural damage found by initial arriving crews. Team members
specially trained in structural collapse rescue and structural shoring
placed wooden shores and plywood inside the damaged area to ensure
structural stability and integrity; and to prevent any further damage to
the home.

There were no injuries during this incident. Damage is estimated at
$10,000 to the building, owned by Dexter Management.

A representative from the city of Columbia Protective Inspection
Division responded to evaluate the structure. He determined it was
structurally sound and that the undamaged side of the duplex was safe
for continued occupancy.

The driver of the vehicle which struck the home was taken into custody
by the Columbia Police Department. Any media inquiries relating to the
accident investigation or charges against the driver should be directed
to the Columbia Police Department.
