City adds equipment to improve recycling operations
(COLUMBIA, MO) - The city of Columbia recently received a grant
to purchase new equipment to improve its recycling operations. The funds
were used for an Eddy Current Separator, which has been installed at the
city’s Material Recovery Facility (MRF). The Eddy Current was bought
with a $45,000 grant from the Mid-Missouri Solid Waste Management
District and the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, and $24,000
in city matching funds. The equipment installation was completed in May
by JLM Services.
The Eddy Current Separator has been installed on the container
sort line to increase the productivity of the line. It sorts aluminum, a
non-ferrous metal, from ferrous metals (tin/steel). The Eddy Current
Separator has increased the capability on the container line by sorting
the aluminum cans automatically and alleviating staff time. The
efficiency of the Eddy Current separation process produces a cleaner
aluminum product for market.
The MRF handles all recyclable material collected by the city of
Columbia Solid Waste Division. This new equipment has greatly
contributed to the city’s automation of the MRF to improve recycling
efforts. For more information about the Solid Waste Division’s
recycling programs, visit the city’s Web site at
