Fire investigators determine cause of afternoon fire

COLUMBIA, MO (December 4, 2008) - Columbia Fire Department
investigators have determined that the fire at the apartment building in
the Links began on the common second floor porch area and it was caused
by discarded smoking materials -- a cigarette.

Damage estimates have increased slightly after all apartments and roof
damage was evaluated and is currently at $30,000.

Residents were allowed to return to their apartments late this
afternoon, however Links management is placing the apartment residents
in other buildings for the next 24-48 hours while repairs and cleaning
are completed.
