Duplex fire leaves mother and two children homeless

COLUMBIA, MO (December 19, 2008) - Columbia firefighters were called at
7:48 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 19, to 1513 Olympic Blvd. for a report of a
structure fire.

Firefighters arrived and found smoke coming from the front of the home.
They entered the structure and found flames inside the living room,
which were brought under control within 10 minutes. Crews then used
large fans to remove the remaining smoke and heat from the home. Thermal
imaging cameras were used to ensure there was no area of hidden fire
throughout the structure. The home sustained significant fire and water
damage to the living room, with severe heat and smoke damage throughout
the entire home. There were no injuries and damage is initially
estimated at $40,000. The duplex is owned by Brittany Development.

The occupant, Candace Benton, reported to fire crews that she left the
home at approximately 6:30 p.m., and when she returned she saw flames
inside the living room, through the picture window. She then called
9-1-1 for fire department assistance.

Investigators from the Columbia Fire Department are currently on-scene
and at this time the cause is under investigation.

Smoke alarms were present in the home and were sounding when fire crews
arrived.

The American Red Cross is providing emergency assistance to Ms. Benton
and her two children, ages 4 years and 2 months, as a result of this
fire.
