Vehicle crashes into Fairview Lake; occupant uninjured
COLUMBIA, MO (February 1, 2008) - Columbia firefighters, along with
Columbia police and EMS units, responded at 11:42 a.m. to a report of a
vehicle submerged in Fairview Lake in the 2500 Block of Rollins Road.
The caller, a passing motorist, was unable to tell if anyone was in the
vehicle.
Firefighters feared the worst, but upon arrival found the driver, James
Froece, 71, of Columbia, the lone occupant, had exited the vehicle and
was on the shore. The vehicle, a blue Volvo Station Wagon, was partially
submerged in the south end of the lake.
Froece did not appear to be injured and refused medical attention.
Froece told firefighters he was backing out of his driveway and
attempted to stop for traffic on Rollins, but instead pushed on the
accelerator and went across Rollins Road, through a neighbor's bushes
and yard, and then backwards off of a retaining wall into Fairview
Lake.
Rollins Road was closed at Fairview Lake for about an hour while a
towing company removed the vehicle from the lake.
