City snow removal operations
(COLUMBIA, MO) - The city of Columbia Public Works Department
announces snow removal operations are in full force. Crews pretreated
first, second and critical priority streets prior to the arrival of the
wintry mix. Crews will continue to make sure these streets are safe and
passable. Once first priority, critical and second priority streets are
passable or clear, crews will move into residential areas since this
event first started with ice.
In order to run the snowplowing operations efficiently, the city
asks citizens to keep parked cars off streets as often as possible.
Parked cars are an obstacle to clearing streets, posing a hazard for
plows. Streets will be plowed more thoroughly if there are fewer cars
parked on them.
Residents have asked why some snowplow trucks have plows raised
during snow events. When snowplows make trips to and from the street
division facility to get more treatment material, they may go over
streets that have already been treated. If streets have already been
treated, crews raise the plows so they do not remove
salt/cinders/calcium chloride that has already been put down. Plows may
also be raised to ensure ice/snow is not bladed back into citizen’s
driveways if the street has already been treated to a safe and passable
condition.
The snow operations will maintain contact with the Joint
Communications Office to handle all emergency situations. The city’s
snow removal map is available online at www.GoColumbiaMo.com for
citizens to view the priority status.
