Attic fire wakes family in early morning
COLUMBIA, MO (February 23, 2008) - Units of the Columbia Fire
Department responded to 604 Hunt Ave. for a residential structure fire
around 4:13 a.m.
Family members staying with Etta Carter were awakened by the smell of
smoke in the early a.m. They eventually went outside where they noticed
smoke coming from the roof of the house.
Firefighters quickly arrived from a nearby station to begin
extinguishing the attic fire. The fire was contained to the attic and
was described as a smoldering fire by investigators. Initial damage
estimates are listed at $25,000 at this time and the cause of the fire
remains under investigation.
Although there was very little damage to the structure of the house,
the residents had to stay with family because much of the ceiling had to
be pulled down to ensure extinguishment. No one in the family was
injured during this incident.
