U.S. Department of Transportation sends Congress interim report on
GetAbout Columbia Nonmotorized Transportation Pilot Program

(COLUMBIA, MO) - Columbia is one of four communities highlighted
in this report which covers the launch and early implementation of the
national nonmotorized transportation pilot program. This program is
providing each of the four communities with $25 million over four years
to implement a comprehensive set of projects and programs to encourage
biking and walking “to carry a significant portion of the
transportation load.”
The program in Columbia and the other three “pilots” is
designed to demonstrate that biking and walking “represent a major
portion of the transportation solution” to the challenges facing so
many urban areas in the United State in providing convenient, healthy,
and less costly personal mobility to its citizens.
The report details many interesting aspect of Columbia’s
program mobilization and launch, particularly the public participation
in program design and project selection. Attention is also paid to the
development of a framework and process to evaluate the program over its
four-year life. “Lessons Learned” complete the presentation of the
program to date and “Future Plans” describe the new construction
that will build a seamless network of biking and walking facilities.
Plans also include the education and promotion programs that will
encourage travelers in Columbia to shift to walking and biking for their
everyday transportation needs.
A final report on the program will be published in 2010. In the
meantime, progress can be monitored on the national program Web site,
www.smartmobility.us. The interim report can be found on the U.S.
Department of Transportation Web site, www.fhwa.dot.gov, or on the city
of Columbia’s Web site, www.GoColumbiaMo.com (search:
