Solar system dedication at Career Center
COLUMBIA, MO (January 16, 2008) -
Thursday, January 17, 4:30 p.m.
Columbia Area Career Center
4203 S. Providence Road
(Columbia, MO) -- Columbia Public Schools will hold a ceremony to
dedicate the solar panels provided by Columbia Water & Light to study
renewable energy. Students at the Columbia Area Career Center will use
the data collected from the panels to apply the science and technology
they have been studying to a real life application.
With this project, Columbia Water & Light hopes to measure the
effectiveness of solar energy in Columbia and raise awareness of this
renewable technology with the students.
The solar project at the Columbia Area Career Center consists of:
o A two kilowatt photovoltaic system that will generate electricity to
be used by the Career Center. This is set up similar to what people can
do at their own home through a net metering agreement. Columbia
customers can now install a solar system and sell excess electricity
back to the utility for others to use.
o Six 10-watt solar panels and one 50-watt solar module were also
installed. They will provide information about the amount of solar
radiation, temperature, wind speed and humidity. This will allow the
students to have quantitative data for solar research projects. The
students will be able to move these smaller units to evaluate what
angle, time of day and time of year are best for solar energy
production.
o The data collected from the solar units will be available on the Web,
which will allow anyone in the community to analyze the data. This will
be valuable to an individual who wants to invest in solar or those
researching solar energy. A link to the solar information can be found
on the city of Columbia’s Web site at www.GoColumbiaMo.com.
The solar system equipment was paid for by Columbia Water & Light and
will be maintained by the Columbia Public School system. The school
district agreed to include solar curriculum in the Career Center’s
classrooms and provide the computer systems for collecting and analyzing
the data. The cost of the project was $30,000.
