City manager names interim police chief

COLUMBIA, MO (June 13, 2008) - City Manager Bill Watkins today
announced the appointment of Captain Thomas G. Dresner as interim chief,
Columbia Police Department, effective July 2, 2008. Dresner will be paid
a salary of $79,965.

A 24-year veteran of the department, Dresner has extensive experience
as an officer, trainer and supervisor. He is the Police Department’s
senior captain and one of its top administrators. He has been a captain
since 1998.

“I am very pleased that Captain Dresner chose to step forward to be
considered for this appointment,” Watkins said. “He is respected by
his colleagues and the community. Most important, he is committed to
working actively to improve an already good Police Department. I wanted
someone who will be more than a caretaker until I name a permanent
chief.”

Dresner earned a bachelor of journalism degree from the University of
Missouri in 1982. In addition to his Police Academy and field training,
Dresner is a certified instructor for Missouri P.O.S.T., or Police
Officer Standards Training. He is a member of several state and national
professional organizations.
