Columbia firefighters and police officers respond to fire
COLUMBIA, MO (June 19, 2008) - Columbia firefighters were called to 200
Oak Street at 10:44 p.m. on Wednesday, June 18, for a report of a
residential fire.
Columbia police officers arrived just prior to fire crews and
discovered moderate smoke and fire from the front door area of the
house. Neighbors told police officers that the tenant may be inside.
Police officers used a portable fire extinguisher from a patrol vehicle
to knock down some fire around the front door and saw a man inside the
door in the living room area. A police officer reached for the man and
pulled him from the residence. Seconds later, the living room flashed
over and became fully involved in fire.
Firefighters arrived on the scene and knocked the fire down in less
then 10 minutes. The home sustained significant fire damage to the
living room, hallway and kitchen. The remainder of the home suffered
significant smoke and heat damage.
Paramedics from University Hospitals transported the tenant to
University Hospitals where the man was admitted to the George Peak Burn
Center for evaluation. No identification or condition report was
available when this release was written. Injuries sustained by the
tenant are not thought to be life threatening. No injuries to police or
firefighters were reported.
Fire investigators have determined that the fire originated in the
living room; however the cause of the fire is under investigation. Fire
investigators do not believe the fire is suspicious in nature.
Damage to the home and contents is estimated at $50,000. It is unknown
if there were working smoke alarms in the home and what role they may
have played if present.
