TreeKeeper volunteers to be recognized Saturday
(COLUMBIA, MO) - Mayor Darwin Hindman will recognize 22 new
TreeKeeper volunteers Saturday, March 8, for completing a six-week
course in tree care and management. A breakfast to thank the volunteers
will be held at Riechmann Pavilion, 2300 E. Walnut, in Stephens Lake
Park beginning at 7:30 a.m. Following the breakfast, TreeKeepers will
work on a tree project in the park.
The TreeKeepers program is sponsored by the city of Columbia
Parks & Recreation Department - Natural Resources Division and the
city’s Office of Volunteer Services. After completing coursework,
volunteers are asked to share 36 hours on tree projects in city parks
and along trails and streets. Projects include planting, pruning and
mulching trees and removing invasive plants.
In addition to the 2008 class, three volunteers from past
classes will be honored for completing their 36 hours of service to the
city: Ben Micek, Jen Micek and Laura Rumen.
Each year, TreeKeeper volunteers give hundreds of hours to city
tree projects. Since the program began in 1998, more than 250
volunteers have participated, giving more than 9,400 hours through
service to the parks and classroom participation.
Another TreeKeepers course will be conducted in early 2009.
Those interested in participating, or volunteering for the city in any
way, should contact the city of Columbia’s Office of Volunteer
Services at 874-7499 or visit the city’s Web site at
www.GoColumbiaMo.com.
