Boards and commissions applications are available
 
COLUMBIA, MO (March 19, 2008) - The Columbia city clerk is accepting
applications for boards and commissions. Applications must be received
by the clerk’s office, 701 E. Broadway, 4th Floor, by noon on Friday,
April 4. Applications are available at the clerk’s office or may be
found on the city’s Web site at www.GoColumbiaMo.com on the City
Council page. The following are current boards and commissions openings:


The Board of Adjustment has one vacancy with the term to expire May 1,
2013. The member must be a resident of the city of Columbia. The board
is responsible for hearing and deciding appeals where it is alleged
there is an error in any order, requirement, decision or determination
made by administrative official in the enforcement of the zoning,
planning and subdividing ordinances. Monthly meetings are held on the
second Tuesday at 7 p.m.

The Airport Advisory Board has two vacancies with terms to expire May
16, 2012. Members must be registered voters of the city and be familiar
with the subject of aviation. The board makes recommendations to Council
for the development and use of the airport. Monthly meetings are held
the first Wednesday following the first Monday at 12 p.m. at the
airport.

The Building Construction Codes Commission has one vacancy for a member
and three vacancies for alternate members (to serve in the absence of
regular members). A regular member is needed in the category of
professional engineer with experience in structural/civil engineering
(term to expire Aug. 1, 2010); and three alternate members are needed
for each of the following categories: professional engineer with
experience in electrical/mechanical engineering (term to expire Aug. 1,
2010); master plumber (term to expire Aug. 1, 2010); person experienced
in fire prevention (term to expire Aug. 1, 2008). The commission
periodically reviews and makes recommendations relating to building
construction codes. Meetings are held on the fourth Monday at 4:30 p.m.

The C.A.R.E. Advisory Board has two vacancies with terms to expire
March 1, 2011. One member must be an employer who has previously
employed C.A.R.E. trainees and both must be interested in promoting the
C.A.R.E. program to current and prospective employers in Columbia and
Boone County. The board advises the Council on matters pertaining to the
C.A.R.E. program. Meetings are held on call.

The Downtown Columbia Leadership Council has three vacancies with terms
to expire May 1, 2009, May 1, 2010, and May 1, 2011. Members shall
develop and recommend to the Council proposed boundaries of an expanded
downtown development area and develop a strategic and underlying concept
plan for that area. Members may also work on other projects as requested
by Council. Meetings are held on call. 

The Board of Electrical Examiners has one vacancy with term to expire
Aug. 1, 2010. The member must be a registered professional engineer. The
board is empowered to give examinations for electricians’ licenses and
certificates. Meetings are held on call.

The Finance Advisory and Audit Committee has one vacancy with the term
to expire Dec. 31, 2010. The member must be a certified public
accountant with knowledge of public administration and finance, and a
qualified voter and resident of the city for at least one year prior to
appointment. The committee makes recommendations on financial matters to
the Council as needed. Meetings are held on call. 

The Mayor’s Committee On Physical Fitness has one vacancy with the
term to expire Nov. 30, 2009. The committee educates the public about
the importance of regular physical fitness activity and promotes,
initiates and encourages local physical fitness and sports programs in
the community. Monthly meetings are held the second Monday at 12:30
p.m.

The Board of Mechanical Examiners has one vacancy with the term to
expire June 17, 2008. The member shall be a general contractor not in
the HVACR business and must be a resident of the city of Columbia. The
board is empowered to give examinations for mechanical heating,
ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration licenses and
certificates. Monthly meetings are held the second Tuesday at 5 p.m.

The Planning and Zoning Commission has one vacancy with the term to
expire May 31, 2013. The member must be a qualified voter and resident
of the city for at least one year immediately prior to appointment and
shall hold no other office or position in city government. The
commission makes recommendations pertaining to planning and zoning
related issues. Meetings are held the Thursday following Council meeting
Mondays at 7 p.m. 

The Public Communication Resource Advisory Committee has seven
vacancies with three terms to expire Dec. 31, 2008 and four terms to
expire Dec. 31, 2009. One member each is needed from Ward 1, Ward 2,
Ward 3, Ward 4, Ward 5 and Ward 6, and one member may be from any ward.
All must be qualified voters and residents of the city of Columbia and
be experienced in the field of communications, citizenship or management
of not-for-profit organizations. Members shall not be paid officers or
employees of the city, nor shall they serve on the board of directors or
be employed by any entity that applies for funding through the committee
or which receives funding upon recommendation of the committee. The
committee advises the City Council in allocating designated revenue to
entities that provide public communication services to Columbia
citizens. Meetings are held on call.
