City manager names internal auditor	
							
	(COLUMBIA, MO) - City Manager Bill Watkins today announced the
appointment of John Blattel as internal auditor for the city of
Columbia, effective May 12. Blattel will be paid an annual salary of
$58,000, in addition to other authorized employee benefits.  
	Reporting directly to the city manager, the internal auditor is
an independent appraisal function established to review the city’s
administrative and financial practices. Work also includes scheduled and
special reviews of city operations.
	Blattel’s experience includes more than 30 years with the
Missouri State Auditor’s office, and he is retiring from his current
position there as director of performance audits. He holds a
bachelor’s degree in business administration from Southeast
Missouri State University and is both a certified public accountant and
a certified fraud examiner.
	According to Watkins, Blattel rose to the top of the field of
applicants because of his professional qualifications and the broad
scope of his work. “Over his extended career, John has seen just about
everything that can hinder performance in the public sector,” Watkins
said. “He’s a keen observer who knows how to build systems and
controls that catch problems, and we’re very fortunate to recruit
someone with such a high level of experience and credentials.”
	Blattel fills a vacancy created last summer when the former
auditor resigned for personal reasons. Watkins said that the internal
auditor position, created in 1996, will be restructured to work closely
with the Finance Advisory and Audit Committee, a citizen panel appointed
by the City Council.
	Blattel is married with three children and two grandchildren. He
currently resides in Jefferson City, Mo.
