Earth Hour lowers electric load
(Columbia, MO) -- Columbia Water & Light staff is estimating
that Columbia’s participation in Earth Hour on Saturday, March 29,
from 8 to 9 p.m. resulted in a 1.72 megawatt drop in the electric load.
The electric load for the hour was 144 megawatts. Electric consumption
for the hour was evaluated on a 15-second interval and compared to the
previous week’s electric load and previous years’ data. The 1.72
megawatts of electricity is equivalent to the amount of power used by 70
homes in Columbia for one day.
The Columbia City Council passed a proclamation at the March 3
meeting to encourage citizens to participate in Earth Hour. Citizens
were asked to voluntarily turn off lights during the hour to increase
awareness about saving energy and avoiding green house gas emissions.
Earth Hour is part of a global observance of Earth Hour Day.
