on Friday, May 23
COLUMBIA, MO (May 21, 2008) - Three crew members from Columbia’s
namesake submarine, USS Columbia, will participate in Memorial Day
Weekend activities. The public is invited to an informal “no host”
reception at 5 p.m., and a 5:15 p.m. ribbon-cutting ceremony, Friday,
May 23, at Boone Tavern and Restaurant, 811 E. Walnut.
Visiting crew members include Lieutenant Jim Hornef, Machinist Mate
First Class Robert Campbell (Sailor of the Year) and Machinist Mate
Andrew Whener.
The crew will attend the Honored Guests and Volunteers Banquet Saturday
night; attend the air show on Sunday; ride in the Memorial Day parade as
guests of the Muddy MO Chapter of the World War II Submarine Veteran’s
Association; and participate in the wreath-laying ceremony at the Boone
County Courthouse on Monday immediately following the parade.
The visit is sponsored by the Columbia Submarine Committee, which is
chaired by Anne Moore, D&M Sound. The VFW Ladies Auxiliary, VFW Post 280
and United States Submarine Veterans, Inc. provide financial resources
to defray costs.
The USS Columbia was christened in September 1994. It has namesake
cities in Missouri, Illinois and South Carolina. Crew from the USS
Columbia have participated in Memorial Day Weekend events every year but
one, since 1994. Columbia, Mo., and the USS Columbia program is one of
