Columbia/Boone County WIC Program contract renewed for FY2009
COLUMBIA, MO (November 10, 2008) - The Columbia/Boone County Department
of Public Health and Human Services (CBCDPHHS) has signed a contract
with the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services to continue
the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and
Children (WIC) for the federal fiscal year 2009. Under the terms of the
contract, the CBCDPHHS will serve 2,400 WIC-eligible persons every
month.
The WIC program provides, at no cost to qualified participants,
nutrition information and checks redeemable for nutritious supplemental
foods. Eligible persons are those who meet WIC income guidelines and are
determined to be at nutritional risk. The WIC program promotes
breast-feeding for infants and educates parents how to make nutritious
food choices every day for themselves and their children.
In FY2008, the Columbia/Boone County WIC Program provided services each
month to an average of 2,331 eligible prenatal/postpartum women, infants
and children up to age 5.
Over the past three years, there has been an increase in the number of
WIC mothers in Boone County who chose breast-feeding or who breast-fed
their infants more than 6 months, due in part to the successful
Breastfeeding Peer Counselor Program.
Persons interested in applying for services or in need of more
information can contact the WIC Program of the Columbia/Boone County
Department of Public Health and Human Services at (573) 874-7384 or
visit the WIC office located in the health department at 1005 West
Worley Street in Columbia. Standards for participation in the WIC
program are the same for everyone regardless of race, color, national
origin, age, disability or sex.
