Early morning fire damages central Columbia home; Columbia firefighter
suffers burn injury - update
COLUMBIA, MO (November 11, 2008) - Columbia Fire Lt. Doug Thoma,
injured while conducting fire fighting operations at this morning's
fire, is doing well after being admitted to the George Peak Memorial
Burn Center. Lt. Thoma suffered burns to his right hand when embers
encroached between his gloves and bunker coat. After some minor grafting
procedures this afternoon, Lt. Thoma is expected to be released from the
Burn Center on Wednesday morning. Lt Thoma is expected to return to full
duty; however a return to work date is unknown.
Fire investigators have determined that the fire began in the back of
the home, in a modified rear porch area. The home was vacant at the time
of the fire. Damage to the structure is estimated between $8,000 and
$10,000. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
