Boards and commissions applications are available
COLUMBIA, MO (November 21, 2008) - The Columbia city clerk is accepting
applications for boards and commissions. Applications must be received
by the clerk’s office, 701 E. Broadway, 4th floor, by noon on Friday,
Dec. 5. Applications are available at the clerk’s office or on the
city’s Web site at www.GoColumbiaMo.com on the City Council page. The
following are current boards and commissions openings:
The Building Construction Codes Commission has two vacancies for
alternate members (to serve in the absence regular members) for each of
the following categories: professional engineer with experience in
electrical/mechanical engineering (term to expire Aug. 1, 2010) and a
master plumber (term to expire Aug. 1, 2010). The commission
periodically reviews and makes recommendations relating to building
construction codes. Monthly meetings are held the fourth Monday at 4:30
p.m.
The Community Development Commission has two vacancies. One member must
be a qualified voter of Ward 1 (term to expire Nov. 1, 2011) and the
other must be a qualified voter of Ward 3 (term to expire Nov. 1, 2010).
Members shall not serve on the board of directors or be employed by any
agency which applies for funding through the commission or which
receives funding upon recommendation of the commission. The commission
acts in an advisory capacity in all matters pertaining to community
development. Monthly meetings are held on call.
The Community Services Advisory Commission has three vacancies with
terms to expire Dec. 31, 2011. Members must be qualified voters and
residents of the city of Columbia. Members shall not serve on the board
of directors or be employed by any agency which applies for funding
through the commission or which receives funding upon recommendation of
the commission. (Each academic and administrative unit of the University
of Missouri shall be considered a separate agency and each school of the
Columbia Public School District shall be considered a separate agency.)
The commission advises the city and county in all matters regarding the
planning and contracting for human service programs to adequately meet
the needs of the citizens. Monthly meetings are held the third Tuesday
at 7 p.m.
The Finance Advisory and Audit Committee has two vacancies with terms
to expire Dec. 31, 2011. Consideration will be given to a business
owner. Both must be qualified voters and residents of the city for at
least one year prior to appointment. The committee makes recommendations
on financial matters to the Council as needed. Meetings are held on
call.
The Firefighters’ Retirement Board has one vacancy with the term to
expire Dec. 31, 2010. The member must be a registered voter and resident
of the city. The board oversees and establishes policies for the fire
retirement trust. Quarterly meetings are held on call.
The Human Rights Commission has one vacancy with the term to expire
March 1, 2010. The member must have demonstrated a strong commitment to
human rights and a belief in the principles of equal opportunity. The
commission advises the Council on human rights issues and reviews and
makes decisions regarding complaints of discrimination filed with the
city. Monthly meetings are held the first Tuesday at 7 p.m.
The Internet Citizens Advisory Group has one vacancy with the term to
expire Oct. 15, 2010. Members assess the user-friendliness and
effectiveness of the city’s Internet activities. The group makes
recommendations to staff and Council
on resource priority for the city’s effective utilization of the
Internet. Meetings are held every other month on the third Wednesday at
5 p.m.
The Library Board has one vacancy to be appointed by the mayor with the
term to expire June 30, 2009. The member must reside within the Library
District and shall hold no other office or position in city government.
Duties include appointing the librarian and overseeing expenditures of
library fund monies. Monthly meetings are held the first Thursday after
the second Tuesday.
The Mayor’s Committee on Physical Fitness has one vacancy to be
appointed by the mayor with the term to expire Nov. 30, 2009. The
committee educates the public about the importance of regular physical
fitness activity and promotes, initiates and encourages local physical
fitness and sports programs in the community. Monthly meetings are held
as needed; quarterly meetings are held the second Monday of the
designated month at 12:30 p.m.
The Board of Mechanical Examiners has one vacancy with the term to
expire June 17, 2011. The member must be a general contractor not in the
HVACR business and a resident of the city of Columbia. The board is
empowered to give examinations for mechanical heating, ventilation, air
conditioning and refrigeration licenses and certificates. Meetings are
held the second Tuesday of the month at 5 p.m.
The Police Retirement Board has one vacancy with the term to expire
Dec. 31, 2010. The member must be a registered voter and resident of the
city. The board oversees and establishes policies for the fire
retirement trust. Quarterly meetings are held on call.
The Public Communications Resource Advisory Committee has three
vacancies with terms to expire Dec. 31, 2010. One member each is needed
from Ward 1, Ward 4 and Ward 5. All must be qualified voters and
residents of the city of Columbia, and be experienced in the field of
communications, citizenship or management of not-for-profit
organizations. Members shall not be paid officers or employees of the
city, nor shall they serve on the board of directors or be employed by
any entity that applies for funding through the committee or which
receives funding upon recommendation of the committee. The committee
advises the City Council in allocating designated revenue to entities
that provide public communication services to Columbia citizens.
Meetings are held on call.
The Special Business District Board has three vacancies with terms to
expire Jan. 1, 2012. Members must be an owner of real property within
the Special Business District, a resident of the Special Business
District, or a person who owns, manages, operates or is employed by a
business located in the Special Business District. The board makes
recommendations to the Council regarding the Special Business District.
Monthly meetings are held the second Tuesday at 4 p.m.
