Joint Project Protects Water Quality

COLUMBIA, MO (November 26, 2008) - One of the Boone County Regional
Sewer District’s largest lagoon systems is no longer needed or
operating, thanks to a capital improvements project shared by the Sewer
District and the City of Columbia. The joint project removes wastewater
discharge into Grindstone Creek. This also removes a source of pollution
and meets the requirements of disinfection regulations.

The project is funded in part by two revenue bond issues approved by
Columbia and Boone County voters in November 2003 and April 2008. User
rates also help pay for the improvement.

The City of Columbia and Sewer District shared the costs of extending a
large sewer line up the South Fork of the Grindstone to the east side of
Old Hawthorne Subdivision. This line allowed for the removal of the El
Chaparral lagoon system.

The Sewer District is constructing another extension of this line to
allow for the closure of the Sunrise Estates and OTSCON Wastewater
Treatment Plants. Like the El Chapparal project, this, too, will
eliminate discharges that are sources of pollution. Expected to cost
about $950,000, this work is set to bid in 2009 and be completed in
2010.
