Local youth to plant 1,300 tulip bulbs and ‘Plant the Promise’

(COLUMBIA, MO) - Over the next two weeks, youth will plant 1,300
red tulip bulbs at schools, public facilities, homes and businesses
primarily in central Columbia to “Plant the Promise” and demonstrate
their commitment to remain drug and alcohol free. “Plant the
Promise” is a joint effort of the Youth Community Coalition and the
city of Columbia’s Office of Volunteer Services.
Between October 20-31, students will plant bulbs around town in
clusters of 10 to 25 that will result in a show of red next spring.
Many of the city’s beautification projects are located at the
edge of the city and are added as part of street improvements. “Plant
the Promise” will bring additional color to the central city and also
give local junior high and high school students a tangible way to show
their decision to not use drugs or alcohol.
The city of Columbia purchased the bulbs with the Youth
Community Coalition coordinating the teens who will volunteer to plant
them. Several local organizations have agreed to serve as planting sites
including the Columbia Housing Authority, Central Missouri Community
Action, the Wardrobe, clients of Boone County Council on Aging and a
number of local schools and businesses.
