Apartment fire injures Columbia resident
COLUMBIA, MO (September 17, 2008) - Columbia firefighters were called
at 3:03 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 17, to 1621 Ashland Road, Riverwalk
Apartments, Apartment 203, for a report of a structure fire.
Fire crews arrived and observed light smoke coming from the apartment.
Fire crews entered the home, where they discovered evidence of a fire,
which had been extinguished prior to their arrival. Further
investigation confirmed there was a fire in the kitchen which had been
extinguished by a neighbor, using a portable fire extinguisher. The fire
was contained to apartment 203. Firefighters also discovered the
occupant of the apartment, 54 year-old Katherine Brown, had suffered
third-degree burns to her arms and hands. She was transported to
University Hospital by ambulance.
Investigators from the Columbia Fire Department were on-scene and at
this time; the cause remains under investigation pending an interview
with the occupant.
Smoke detectors were present in the apartment and were sounding upon
the Fire Department's arrival. Fire crews used thermal imaging cameras
to ensure there were no areas of hidden fire or heat. Large electric
fans were used to remove smoke from the apartment.
Residents are reminded that if they discover a fire in any building,
immediately evacuate and call 9-1-1 to report the fire. For your safety,
do not attempt to extinguish the fire yourself.
