Columbia Transit offers ‘Try Transit’ day
(COLUMBIA, MO) - Haven’t tried Columbia Transit? Here is your
opportunity to try it…for free. Columbia Transit is hosting a free
“Try Transit” Thursday on May 7, all day long, anywhere Columbia
Transit goes. Save gas, avoid parking hassles, reduce traffic congestion
and improve the environment.
“On May 7 we are asking residents to try a stress-free and
money saving commute option” said Ken Koopmans, transportation manager
for the city of Columbia. “Trying Columbia Transit is one of the
things we want people to consider when looking for an alternative mode
of transportation”.
Fares for Columbia Transit are very reasonable at $1 for adults
and 50 cents for students, seniors, Medicaid recipients, low-income
individuals and certified handicapped. Columbia Transit buses and
Paratransit vans are equipped with either a wheelchair lift or ramp, and
buses "kneel" to lower the first boarding step. City buses are also
equipped with bicycle racks to let you combine bicycling with transit.
Public transportation is much better for our environment because
it produces less pollution. Buses produce 95 percent less carbon
monoxide per passenger mile than private vehicles. Riding the bus also
increases energy efficiency. Public transit is twice as efficient as
private automobiles. Current public transportation usage reduces United
States gasoline consumption by about 4.2 billion gallons each year. More
facts and figures from the American Public Transportation Association
are available at www.apta.com.
As part of Bike Walk and Wheel Week, Columbia Transit is also
hosting “Your Bike is Your Ticket” from May 2-8. Riders who bring
their bike can ride free to any destination on the city bus routes
(valid week of May 2-8 only). There is never a charge to use the bike
racks on city buses, but they are offered on a space-available basis.
Bikes are not allowed inside the bus.
